This Is Why Your Website Isn’t Converting

Disclaimer, more is not the answer.

“Why isn’t my website converting?” is a common question I get from clients during our first meeting. Now, some self proclaimed web expert will list off 100s of potential reasons why your site isn’t converting. They’ll use dumb shit like load times or header length or search engine configuration. These guys are just bad sales people trying to use big technical words or phrases to sell you their services.

Truthfully, the reason why your site is not converting is probably much more simplistic.

THE VISITOR HAS NO IDEA WHAT TO DO BECAUSE YOU’VE BOMBARDED THEM WITH SHIT ON YOUR HOMEPAGE

The busy homepage is an absolute killer. If someone would describe your site as being cluttered it’s probably turning away potential customers. Building a site that clearly directs a customer to take the action you want them to is the best way to convert your site visitors.

The best example of this simplistic design principle is netflix.com, they have a very small tab for existing customers to sign in and the rest of their homepage is designed to encourage others to sign up. Netflix doesn't promote any of their new shows on their home page, they don’t have a huge explanation of how to use Netflix, they just have that simple sign up button.

Building a website that converts begins with thinking about what a conversion looks like for your business and then building a site that makes it as easy as possible for that visitor to complete the task. This might be booking an appointment, making reservations, or reading an article. In any case this task should be your site’s focus. Do your best to create a landing page where your visitor can convert from your homepage without having to click or scroll to any other tabs.

Simplicity is the key to success.
