Marketing Is Not Just Fucking Advertising

I promise you that your understanding of all the facets that need to be considered when discussing marketing will greatly improve the success of your business. Believe it or not, marketing is more than just advertising.

It is commonly broken into 5 parts:

  • Placement
  • Promotion
  • People
  • Price
  • Product

Here is a logical way for thinking about the varying parts:

Product: what are you selling? What are it’s features? How is it made? Where is it made? What are the benefits of this product?

Pro Tip: Explain your product in a single sentence (people buy benefits not features).

Price: what do you need to charge? How many units will you need to sell at various prices to pay off your expenses? How will you structure your price, one payment or recurring payments?

Pro Tip: Price is how people perceive quality so consider this in your pricing strategy.

People: who’s this product made for? Where do they spend their time? Where is their attention?

Pro Tip: Think about someone you personally know that the product would be perfect for.

Placement: where do your customers shop? How can you get your product in front of your customers?

Pro Tip: Look for substitute products in the market and look for inefficiencies in their distribution.

Promotion: where is your customers attention? What does your budget look like? How can you get in front of your customers?

Pro Tip: Create a list of associated interests that you know your customer has.
