How To Find Your Passion
We no longer have a desire for food and water. We live in an age of abundance, one in which even some of the less fortunate people still have the basic necessities of life. Food. Water. Shelter.
Our abundance has led us to conquering higher level tasks, finding meaning in new ventures. We no longer spend our days chasing down dinner with a spear or harvesting acres of grain. Our lives now consist of looking for this elusive, slippery, substance. We call it passion.
Successful entrepreneurs, god like musicians and professional athletes, all thank passion for their continued success. Motivational speakers often tell people to “find their passion” and once you find it “don’t ever stop doing it”. All of this advice misses the point. If passion was something that could be found, why don’t you tell me where to look?
Passion cannot be found. Passion is something that comes after the hard work. Passion is something that you feel after you discover what it takes to be the best in the world at something. Passion is an appreciation of a process.
As humans we are born passionate about three things; food, water, and shelter. We are driven to survive, that’s it. So anyone that tells you that you are born with a passion is completely incorrect.
Successful people often talk about passion with this twinkle in their eyes, listen to Bill Gates talk about the first time he saw a computer and you would think he was talking about his wife. But this is also incorrect, these interviews are recorded when the passion is already solidified, years of hard work and repeated success can make someone become passionate about almost anything. So don’t listen to these interviews or read these quotes and believe that they knew it was their passion from the beginning. They didn’t.
To find your passion you have to make a decision to do something until you are great at it. Kobe Bryant decided to play basketball until he was one of the greatest of all time. Eminem decided to rhyme words until he was untouchable in a battle rap. Bill Gates decided to write code until he could create the best computer programs. Phil Knight decided to design shoes until he created the best shoes for athletes. It’s about committing to something and developing a passion for it.
Here is how to find your passion:
- ) Investigate anything that you have a seemingly natural inclination towards.
- ) Begin learning about how you could become the best in the world at the given inclination.
- ) Work extremely hard for years. The look back from atop your mountain at your passion.
